Cincinnati introduces new defensive coordinator Tyson Veidt
On Monday afternoon, Scott Satterfield introduced his new defensive coordinator, Tyson Veidt.
"When you spend a lot of time on the offense like I do as a head coach, you want to have to have to go find someone to help with that defense and you got to have somebody that you trust, number one." Said Satterfield in his introductory statement.
Veidt comes to Cincinnati after spending the last eight seasons at Iowa State as both linebackers and associate head coach under Matt Campbell.
"Being in the Big 12 for the last eight years has been huge and what they've been able to accomplish and do at Iowa State over that period of time, particularly on defense, they've done an outstanding job."
Veidt has led the Big 12's best defense over the past eight years and was named the National Linebacker Coach of the Year by Football Scoop in 2017 and was a nominee for the Broyles Award, given to the nation's top assistant coach, in 2018.
An Ohio native, Veidt is an instant impact type guy in terms of relationships and credibility around the state.
"I'm excited to be back in my home state and a place where [I have] great relationships not just with my immediate family, but with many other people as well" Veidt told reporters after being introduced. "Excited for the opportunity."
In terms of scheme, Veidt will assess the personnel returning and get to know the team, then go from there with how to best use his players' abilities.
"Have not had a lot of time to get familiar with the specific personnel here yet, so working on that as we speak. Number one, you want to be fundamentally sound. That's where any great defense starts is with fundamentals."
Veidt continued.
"Obviously want to keep in our minds to keep things simple so your guys have the abilitiy to play as fast and physical as they can. Want to be an attacking style defense so I think with those things, we've got the right pieces here."
