Northern Kentucky University’s men’s basketball team continued to build momentum within the Horizon League, delivering a commanding 73-60 victory over Detroit Mercy on Wednesday night at Truist Arena. The Norse showcased balanced scoring, defensive prowess, and teamwork to maintain their perfect 2-0 conference record.

Key Performers Drive Norse to Victory

NKU’s offensive and defensive contributions were led by four players scoring in double figures. Randall Pettus II and Trey Robinson topped the team with 19 points each, demonstrating both efficiency and versatility. Pettus converted 6 of 10 shots and added two three-pointers, while Robinson bounced back from a challenging outing against Norfolk State to shoot 6 of 9, including two deep triples.

Keeyan Itejere proved to be a force in the paint, contributing 13 points, seven rebounds, and four blocks. His first-half dominance included 11 points, setting the tone for the Norse. Meanwhile, Josh Dilling continued his sharpshooting streak, knocking down three three-pointers en route to 11 second-half points.

Sam Vinson, though struggling offensively, facilitated NKU’s attack with eight assists and two steals. Hubertas Pivorius provided a spark off the bench, finishing with a team-high +16 plus/minus while connecting on two crucial three-pointers.

Game Breakdown

The first half saw NKU and Detroit Mercy exchange blows, with the Norse taking a 36-29 lead into halftime, thanks in large part to Itejere’s dominant presence. Detroit Mercy closed the gap to two early in the second half, but NKU’s consistent offensive pressure and defensive stops extended their lead to 14 in the closing minutes.

The Norse defense, led by Vinson and Itejere, kept Detroit Mercy at bay, forcing turnovers and limiting the Titans’ opportunities in the paint.

Looking Ahead

The Norse will look to carry their momentum into Saturday’s matchup against South Carolina State, their final non-conference game of the season. The game tips off at noon ET at Truist Arena.
